Embroidery digitizing is the step nobody warns you about when you buy an embroidery machine: the machine doesn't stitch images, it stitches instructions. Someone has to turn your artwork into a stitch file, deciding stitch types, densities, underlay, pull compensation and the order the needle travels, before a single thread moves. That translation is called digitizing, and in 2026 it still sits between every embroiderer and every new design.
Most embroiderers solve it one of three ways.
The most common is paying a digitizing service per design. We checked eight services in August 2026: a standard left-chest logo runs $10 to $25 at nearly all of them, complex or jacket-back work reaches $50 and up, and turnaround is anywhere from four hours to the next day. That price never goes away. Every new customer logo is another invoice and another wait. It's telling that the busiest digitizing services have login pages with steady search traffic: their customers come back weekly.
The second route is buying digitizing software and learning the craft. The commercial suites are serious tools at serious prices: Wilcom's Hatch line runs $199 to $1,199 depending on tier, Brother PE-Design lists around $1,800, Embrilliance StitchArtist spans $169 to $649. There's a middle shelf (Embird at roughly $299 with its digitizing plugin, SewArt at $75), and there's Ink/Stitch, genuinely free and open-source. What all of these share is the learning curve. Digitizing is a skill; the software is a workbench, not a button. Ink/Stitch users say it plainly: things that are one click in commercial software take research and practice.
The third route is new. Since 2025 a wave of instant AI digitizers has appeared, converting an image to a stitch file in under a minute for a few euros per design or a monthly subscription. We think this wave has the right economics and the wrong proof. The consistent community verdict on automated output is that it looks fine on screen and disappoints on the machine: densities that pucker, paths that thread-nest, and above all small text that turns to mush. Lettering below four or five millimetres is the canonical failure of automated digitizing, and it's the first thing on most customer logos. It says something that manual services now advertise "hand-punched, never auto-digitized" as a selling point.

Joining the waitlist gets you one confirmation email with two or three short questions about how you digitize today, and you can answer by simply replying to it. The answers genuinely shape what gets built first.
Whatever you end up using (us, a service, or your own hands in Ink/Stitch), here's the checklist we'd apply to any digitizing option in 2026. Ask what a revision costs; good services include them free, and surprise edit fees are the most common complaint in the trade. Ask which file formats are included, because paying again for an EXP export of a file you already bought is a racket. Ask about small text before you send the order: a service that quotes you without asking about your smallest lettering hasn't looked at your artwork. And for anything automated, ask for sew-out photos, not renders. Thread doesn't lie.
